Barpeta is the gateway to Manas
National Park, one of the world heritage sites of Assam
and a tiger reserve of India. Barpeta is a town located in
the Barpeta district of Assam.
Barpeta is connected with the rest of Assam as well as Bengal
through the National Highway 31. There is a railway station
at Barpeta located 21 k.m from Barpeta Town.
Barpeta is on the western part of Assam nearing the Bengal
boarder. The district was curved out from Kamrup district
of Assam in 1983. Barpeta is bounded
by Bhutan in the north,
Nalbari district in the east, Kamrup and Goalpara district
in the south and Bongaigaon district
in the west.
The economy of Barpeta mainly depends on agriculture. Traditional
Handicraft, Wood Craft, Pottery is also an occupation for
a substantial part of the population.

Manas National Park – The Park is located 52 kms
from Barpeta Town, on the banks of the river Manas, which
flows along the Park. More
River Side View – The main rivers of Barpeta
are Manas, Beki and Brahmaputra. The riverside offers great
scenic views to attract tourists. View from the bridges on
National highway 31 over Beki and Manas provide panoramic
view of the surrounding area.
Barpeta Satra – The Satra located at the
heart of the city and it attracts devotees from all over the
Assam particularly during Holi and annivarsaries of various
Vaishnava Gurus. The Kirtan Ghar is considered to be the largest
in Assam.
Pari hareswar devalaya, dubi – Located 25
kms from Barpeta. Pari hareswar devalaya is an ancient temple.
Chinpara-Vithi – About half a kilometer north
of Barpeta Satra is the location of Chinpara-Vithi. It is
the place where Srimanta Sankardeva landed from his boat at
Barpeta on banks of Palangdi Bori, which is presently called
Palangdihati.
Brass Metal Industry of Sarthebari – Sarthebari
town is 21 kms from Barpeta Town and is famous for the household
brass metal industry. Large number households engaged in the
industry create a variety of artifacts that are traditionally
used by the Assamese people.
