Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the
oldest sanctuary of Assam. It is located
in the Karbi Anglong area. Garampani in local language means
‘hot water’ and the Wildlife Sanctuary by this name is famous
for its hot springs and waterfalls. The sanctuary is rich
in its bio-diversity. Some rare birds can be seen in this
sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to hoolock gibbons and golden
langurs.
The Wild life sanctuary can be accessed through Dimapur airport
in Nagaland which is 55 kilometers away. The Jorhat
Airport is also nearby, 85 kms from the Sanctuary. The road
connectivity is provided through National Highway 39, Guwahati
being about 6/7 hours drive. The Furkuting rail Junction is
just 20 kms from the sanctuary. The junction is well connected
with other places of Assam and rest of India. Golaghat,
the nearest town, is about 25 kms away.
The area of Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary is relatively small,
just about 6.05 sq. kms. The sanctuary is full of rare and
endangered flora and fauna. The climate of this sanctuary
is moist tropical. The vegetation of the santuary is tropical
semi-evergreen.
Flora and Fauna
The Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary provides
habitat to a wide variety of wild animals & birds. The mammals
population of the sanctuary include the Tiger, Leopard, Clouded
Leopard, Leopard Cat, Jungle Cat, Barking Deer, Sambar, Asian
Elephant, Gaur, Hoolock Gibbon, Capped Langur, Slow Loris,
Pig Tailed Macawue, Rhesus Macaque, Chinese Pangolin, Civet,
Indian Fox, Mongoose etc. Common reptiles in the forests include
the Python, Cobra, Monitor lizards and a variety of amphibians.
The common bird species in the forest include – Red Jungle
Fowl, Kaleej Pheasant, different species of Hornbill, Green
Pigeon, Green Imperial Pigeon, Racket tailed Drongo, Myna,
Jungle Myna, Hill Myna, Blackhooded Oriole, Parakeet, Dove,
Drongo, Bulbul, Minivet, Eagle, Kingfisher, Woodpecker, Barbet,
Owl, Brown Fish Owl etc. |
