Assam

The Gateway to North East of India

Assam is the second largest among the northeastern states of India. It is the central state in the Northeast Region and serves as the gateway to the rest of the Seven Sister States. Any tour to North East India is incomplete and inconceivable if Assam is not on the itinerary. Assam has several major attractions for tourists travelling to North East India.

The landscape with its rare combination of plains, mountains, and Plateaus is a treat for the eye. The area is rich in bio-diversity with a number of wildlife preserves in the state. Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park are of international fame for their bio-diversity and tourist friendliness. Assam is the home of the largest number of one-horned Rhinos in the world. A wide variety of flora and fauna, many of which are on the endangered list, can be seen here.

Assam is a land of myths, mysteries, folklore, and legends. It is one of the most forested States in India. Assam is also known for its handicraft items made of cane, bamboo, brass etc.

The ethnic diversity of Assam is also unique. A large number of tribes such as the Bodo, Kachari, Karbi, Miri, Mishimi, Rabha, etc co-exist in Assam. There are also tribal people of central India who were brought to Assam by the British for Tea cultivation. The state is a melting pot of a number of ethnic, and cultural groups that co-exist in the state.

With its ruins and monuments, natural beauty and exotic wildlife, colourful people and their colourful festivals and a wide range of adventure sports, Assam is fast coming up as one of the most attractive tourist destinations in India.

Getting There

Guwahati is the largest city in the entire North East India. The city is well connected to the rest of India by air and train. From Guwahati trains and buses will connect you to all the other parts of the state as well as other states of North East. Other major rail stations in Assam include Tinsukia and Dibrugarh towards the east and Bongaigaon and Barpeta towards the west. Other airports in the state include Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Silchar and Tezpur airports.
