Karbi Anglong is one of the eastern most
districts of Assam. Diphu is the district
head-quarter of Karbi Anglong district. It is the largest
district of Assam.
Karbi Anglong is a hilly are where enchanting natural green
forests and picturesque hills attract tourist throughout the
year. The colorful local tribes with rich varied culture also
is an attraction. There are several adventure tourism options
in the area. One of the common trek here is the trek to Singhason.
The nearest airport is Dimapur in Nagaland 54 km away from
Diphu. The district capital has a railway station. Also the
National Highway 37 and 39 passes through the Karbi Anglong
district connecting it to the rest of North East.
Diphu, the district head-quarter is 172 kms from Guwahati.
Karbi Anglong enjoys autonomy under the provision of Sixth
Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The district of Karbi
Anglong, occupying a total area of 10,434 Sq. Km, lies at
an elevation of about 186 mt above the sea level. The district
is bounded by Golaghat district in the east, Meghalaya and
Morigaon district in the west, Nagaon and Golaghat district
in the north and NC Hills district and Nagaland state in the
south.
The district has three sub-divisions: Diphu, Hamren and Bokajan.
The population of the district is predominantly tribal. The
major tribal ethnic groups include Karbis, Bodos, Kukis, Dimasas,
Hmars, Garos, Rengma Nagas, Tiwas, Man (Tai Speakings). A
large number of non-tribal population also live in this hilly
region. The main languages spoken are Karbi, Assamese, Bodo,
Bengali & Hindi.
The Karbis are the major local tribe who gives the district
its present name. The Karbis are divided into three groups
namely 'CHINTHONG', 'RONGHANG' and 'AMRI'. The Karbis have
five clans called "KUR". These are Terang, Teron, Enghee.
Ingti and Timung. The festivals observed by the Karbis are
"Chojun Puja" or "Swarak Puja", "Rongker", "Chokk-eroi", "Hacha-Kekan",
"Chomangkan" etc.
The economy of Karbi Anglong district is agriculture dependent.
In the hills “jhum” system of cultivation is common. Horticulture
plays an important role on the tribal economy. |
Trekking to Singhason
Expeditions to Singhason, the highest peak of the district
with altitude of about 1600 mtrs. through rainforest, reverie,
rocky hills. While trekking one can watch the innumerable
variety of birds and animals that are available in the area
including the barking deer, pygmy hog, spotted deer, monkeys,
langoors etc. A second World War Air-Strip on top of the hill
acts as a camp site for further exploration in the area. Great
views of the Brahmaputra Valley can be seen from the hill
top. The Himalayan mountain range with its snow clad ranges
can also be seen from here.
Karbi Anglong Wildlife Sanctuary
Covering an area of 96 sq km, Karbi Along Wildlife Sanctuary
is the home for a number of animals such as the elephant,
leopard, water buffalo, deer, monitor lizard and pythons.
Bird species include great Himalayan hornbill, imperial pigeon,
green pigeon, emerald dove, hill partridges, jungle fowl,
pheasant, hoopoe, koel, king fisher, storks, herons, pelicans,
wood pecker, mynas, yellow bittern and egrets.
Marat Longri Wildlife Sanctuary
Marat Longri Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Karbi Anglong
Autononous District Council. It has been declared a wildlife
sanctuary in 2003. The area of the Sanctuary is spread over
451 sq km. The Sanctuary can be reached through the Dimapur
Airport (60 kms) or the Diphu Railway station (8 kms).
Amreng Tourist Centre 120
Kms from Diphu and 30 km from Lanka (Nagaon district) the
Amreng is a river cape situated between Kapili river and its
tributary "Amreng River" surrounded by mystic blue
hills and evergreen forest, it is famous for unique natural
beauty.
Khanduli Tourist Centre
Situated in the Hamren Sub-Division. The area offers temperate
grassland in Tropical country. Extensive grassland with undulating
moulds looks like desert sand dunes in clear moonlight. This

Botanical Garden 5 km from
Diphu Town, this Botanical garden is an ideal place for an
evening stroll. You can also opt for rowing in the semi natural
