Nameri National Park is one of the most
beautiful forests in Assam. The National
Park is spread over 213 sq. km and located in the foothills
of Himalayas. Tezpur is the major town in the vicinity. You
can come to Nameri through Tezpur
airport (45 kms away). The railhead at Ragapara is a little
further away (81 kms).
Wildlifing and forest visits are the primary attraction of
the forests. The Park also gives an opportunity to the tourists
for water sports activities. River rafting, swimming, sunbathing
can be enjoyed in the different river islands.
Nameri National Park was set up as a sanctuary in 1985 with
an area of 137 sq. km. In 1998, another 75 sq. km were added
to the total area.
This
is the third national Park and the second Tiger reserve of
Assam. The park consists mostly of deciduous forests. On the
Northern part of Nameri, the continuation of the same forest
in Arunachal Pradesh is called Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary.
The most famous occupant of the forest are the Elephant and
the Tiger. Apart from these a large variety of wild life makes
Nameri there home. The common wildlife species in the National
Park include the Sloth Bear, Gaur (Indian Bison), Dhole (the
Asiatic wild dog), Hog Deer, Muntjac, Wild Boar, Himalayan
Black Bear, Capped Langur, Indian Giant Squirrel, Tiger Leopard,
Clouded Leopard, Sambar, Assamese macaque and many others.
The variety of fauna in the forest is also impressive. Several
species of non aquatic grassland species can be found here.
The park is paradise for bird lovers with over 300 species
of the feathered bipeds available in the forests. The white
winged wood duck (an endangered species) is one of the main
attractions among bird watchers here. Other species include
Drongos, grey
headed fishing eagle, Bee-eaters, Babblers,
Plovers, Mainas, Barbets, Bulbuls, Ibis and four species of
