If you are visiting Darjeeling, you can
hardly let pass Mirik. The place is only 49 km from Darjeeling
and 52km from Siliguri and can be reached from either place
quite easily. Mirik is 1767 meters above the sea level and
has a relatively thin population of about 15,000 people.
This place came in the tourist map of Darjeeling
District only in the 1970s. It has all that it takes to attract
tourists; it is surrounded by forests, flowers and is a very
peaceful place.
There
are a number of options that you may exercise while planning
your trip to Mirik. You may stay here for one or two nights
and explore the place and its surrounding. If you are constrained
by time, you may stay at Darjeeling and we will organise your
day trip to Mirik from there. Being an hour and half drive
from Darjeeling makes a nice day excursion. The third option
is for those who have very limited time in hand, you may ask
our executive to take you to Darjeeling from Bagdogra or New
Jalpaiguri via Mirik instead of the usual route. On your way
you may spend an hour or so besides the lake and proceed on
your journey onwards.
What to see around
The lake Samendu
Lake Somendu is about 1.25 km. long and a 3.5 km road surrounds
the lake. The lake is the main attraction of Mirik. Swimming
in the lake is not advisable since the wastewater from the
town falls in this lake. At the backdrop of the lake, you
will get an idyllic view of Mt. Kanchenjunga and the green
luster of Oak, Chestnut and Maple. Boating n this lake placid
is a must to soothe the soul of a weary traveler. A stroll
around the lake is highly recommended. You can also go for
a horse ride around the lake.
Mirik is surrounded by some of the best
tea estates of the world and the region is famous for its
numerous orange orchards and cardamom plantations.
Apart from these, the nurseries here house
a good collection of orchids although there number is not
quite large. Mirik monastery is a highly sacred place for
the Buddhists of the region.
Trekking from here to Kurseong
via Balasun River & Namsu could be covered within the
couple of days only.
Kawlay
Dara View point - One can get a sweeping view of the plains
as well as the snow capped mountains from this viewpoint.
The sunrise and sunset from here is a visual delight. The
viewpoint is about 30 minutes walk from the tourist hub.
Helipad & Swiss Cottage - The hilltop helipad offers
a panoramic view of the town and the Samendu Lake.
Devi-Sthan - The small temple, situated under dense
foliage of the 'dhupi' forest, is considered very holy by
the local.
