Birpara
- a tiny town in the Jalpaiguri district
is a small but commercially significant destination. People
of eighteen tea gardens in and around are dependent on this
town for their essentials.
Population of Birpara is about 30000 and
it is spread in an area of about 900sq. km. Birpara is 118
km. far from Siliguri.
This is the melting pot of different cultures
where the aborigines, the tea garden workers, Marwaris, Asamese,
Bengalis from both side of the border and Nepalese leave together
in harmony. Birpara is surrounded by tea gardens and basties
(villages). The tea gardens around has ensured that people
in this area have a relatively better standard of leaving.
Major occupation of people is service. Although many are engaged
in businesses as well.
Gomtu in the Bhutan boarder is about 25kms
far from Birpara. Set among the hills, Gomtu is a virgin destination
with beautiful and serene environment. The road leading from
Birpara to Gomtu is covered with lush green tropical vegetation.
A temple of goddess Kali at Gomtu is quite
famous.
There are about seven small and medium sized hotels in Birpara.
Hotel Sriram Lodge is among the better ones.
