Parties to oppose rickshaw ban - August 1, 2002

Rickwhaw in SiliguriSiliguri : The decision to ban the rickshaw to enter the three main thoroughfares in Siliguri has made the non-left political organizations annoyed against the left-front dominated Siliguri Municipal Corporation.

There are many people and parties like the traders of Bidhan Market, Congress, Trinamul Congress, BJP and INTUC who are not satisfied with this decision.

It is revealed from the latest information from SMC CEO Mr. G. Namchu that out of 25000 rickshaws plying in Siliguri, only 6280 are licensed. In addition there are about 1800 licensed rickshaw-vans in Siliguri. These slow conveyances capture most of the road space and create traffic jam in the town. Mr. Namchu has said that he is not in support of reducing the number of rickshaws all at once; rather he suggested phasing out over a time limit should be proscribed. He also supported the need for alternative modes of transportation for the public.

Secretary of Cycle Rickshaw Owners Association Mr.Ramon Dey Dhara thinks that it is unfair to prohibit the rickshaws from parts of the town. Although there is a large area for them where there is no constriction, these roads are the main source of their business. Stopping them from entering these areas is nothing short of a conspiracy to make them unemployed.
