Move to stop harassment of tourists - August 29, 2002

It was revealed that in the last few years the unfettered tourism had decreased the attraction of the Queen of Hills, Darjeeling. So a drive against this will soon be launched by the DGHC.

Some corrective measures like introducing registrations for the travel operators and hoteliers are decided to be taken. As there is no rule for the hoteliers to get registered DGHC have already requested the Government to provoke a new law in this regard. The touts are another party who are creating problems the tourists. They make the tourist bound to go to the hotels where they get the commission more. A drive was organized by the District Authority against the touts, but for some unknown reasons the mission was not a success. The tourism department is thinking about the regular inspection of the hotels in Darjeeling. Most of the hotels which are escalating in the hills are not up to the mark and there is no control of Municipality over them in the cases of hygiene standards and other services.
One of the senior officials of DGHC said that they are going to take some projects for the promotion of tourism in the entire hill region. DGHC Chairman Mr.Subhash Ghishing added that he is trying to set up a new tourist spot near Manjukhola in Mirik.
