Land slide hits Kurseong - July 1, 2002

A sudden landslide damaged the main connecting road between Siliguri and Darjeeling - National Highway 55 - last night. It occurred near.

Kurseong and resulted in the death of a mother and daughter, Madhu Bharati (40) and her 14-year-old daughter were killed in their sleep. Another house nearby was also damaged but the inmates escaped unharmed. According to reports the land slide occurred around 11pm due to heavy shower in the evening. The landslide caused disruption in traffic as both the road and Toy Train track was damaged heavily.

Officials of National Highway IX are working on a war footing to restore road connection by late this evening. Two pay loaders has been put into service to clear up the road. Work was delayed in the work as the local people protested against blasting of the two big boulders that has fallen on the road. According to the Railway Authorities, it will take about a week to restore the tracks of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.
