Rangit water World set to become next attraction for adventure tourists - November 27, 2002

Lack of adventure sports infrastructure in the hills - especially that of water sports - has been a disadvantage for the tourism industry of Darjeeling - Sikkim region. The only available option so far has been rafting in river Tista. At last some good news awaits the adventure lovers.

At the convergence of Rangit and Rathong River, a new water theme park named Rangit Water World is being inaugurated by the State Tourism Minister of Sikkim Mr. Gyalsten on 26th November

This initiative was taken by the local people at first and the government of Sikkim soon responded by approving it. The site has been developed as a Picnic spot for the locals and rock climbing facilities will be available soon.

Legship Tourism development Corporation and a local NGO named Manav Seva Samity are the main bodies behind this project. NHPC also played an important role for the creation of this aquatic park by providing the know-how and the place.
The park was a joint effort of the parties related to it. Manav Seva Samity collected the required money mainly through donations. The State Tourism Department procured two rafts at cost of Rs.12 lakhs. The rafts has been leased to the local for an annual rent of Rs.40000. Another sum of Rs. 1.5 lakhs has gone into insurance and the step drain of the park. The cost of setting up the park has come to Rs. 5 lakhs.

Initially the park will consist of only rafting and boating facilities. The splendid valleys, monasteries of Ralong, Tashiding and Pemayangtse and some of the Sikkim's famous lakes and waterlands are nearby and will increase the attraction of the place. The object behind the establishment of this park is to ease poverty and unemployment among the local.
