Investors keen to develop Uttaranchal tourism

Dehradun, Aug. 5. - Leaders in the tourism industry, including Mahindra Hotels & Resorts, DS Group, Purvankara, Omaxe, Fomento Group, Usha Breco, Delara Tourism, SPES and a consortium of fair wood consultants and Chescor Capital have approached the Uttaranchal government to develop its tourism sector.

This, however, is claimed to be the outcome of a Tourism conclave, organised in Mussorie by the state government earlier this year. Investors from various parts of the world have also evinced keen interest in the projects along with the ambitious Hempur Eco-Destination Project in the Ramnagar-Kashipur area, according to tourism department officials. This project envisages development of an eco-tourism hub in the Kumaon hills on 325 hectares of land involving an investment of around Rs. 512 crore by the private sector - the project is the first of its kind in the country.

Further, inquiries have also been received from several overseas developers and some leading corporates who are expected to participate in the project.

While in the Hempur project has caught the fancy of investors, many more attractive projects are in the pipeline. Some of them include in setting up of an International Ski Resort complex in Dyara Bugyal in Uttarakashi, development of George Everest Estate in Mussoorie, enroute facilities along the Char Dham, commercialization of Tourist Rest House run by GMVN & KMVN and setting up of ropeways at strategic locations.

With the setting up of a Tourism Development board by the state the stage is set for the award of the first mega tourism project in the state, the tourism officials say.

The government is being advised by the Uttaranchal Infrastructure Development Company Ltd. a joint venture of the state government and IDFC. A two-phase process is proposed for the award of the projects. First technical competency and second financial strength would be assessed

This would be followed by evaluation of Master Plans and financial proposals. The process is expected to be completed over the next three months.
