GUWAHATI, Aug.6. - Naturalist and Padmashree
award winner Dr. Robin Banerjee died at 6.30 this morning
at his Golaghat home.
Dr. Banerjee was cremated in the evening
on the lawns of his bunglow. Government offices and educational
institution were closed as a mark of respect to "Uncle
Robin" who had put Kaziranga on the world map courtesy
his 55 minute film Kaziranga in the early 1960s.Dr. Banerjee
made several films on the flora and fauna of different places
across the world, which won him considerable acclaim. He was
awarded the Padmashree in 1971. Born in Murshidabad district
of West Bengal, Dr. Banerjee made Assam his home after the
World War II, during which he served as a doctor with the
Royal British Navy.He had converted his bunglow into a museum
called Uncle Robin's Natural History Museum for Children.
