Darjeeling, Aug. 7. An Information Communication Technology
(ICT) Centre for the underprivileged was inaugurated at the Darjeeling
Railway Station today.
The project is part of the Unesco-sponsored
community development programme the World Heritage Darjeeling Himalayan
Railway.
There are similar centres at Sukna and Kurseong railway stations.
The aim of the pilot project is to empower people living below the
poverty line with `productive information`. These ICT
centres are equipped with Internet-connected computers and other
communication devices. They are available to the poor for free.
Opining the centre here today local DGHC councilor Mr. K. B. Gurung
praised the UNESCO initiative and assured `full cooperation.`
Mr. Rajesh Agarwal expert consultant to the UNESCO was present
at the occasion.
Later Mr. Agarwal met the local representatives, including the
civic chairman, Mr. Passang Bhutia, and invited proposals towards
the development of the town. Darjeeling may host an international
donors conference likely to be organised by the UNESCO next year.
Mr. Darjeeling should focus on health and sanitation, drinking
water, traffic and solid waste management. He said the national
standing committee on the DHR would be holding its second meeting
in Delhi next month.
