Crackdown on animal trophy owners

Darjeeling, Aug. 12. - The wild life Darjeeling Division (I) has decided to soon start a drive against the illegal, possession of `wild animal article or trophy or uncured trophy` soon in the three Hill subdivisions.

Divisional Forest Officer Mr. Raju Das said that despite several notifications and advertisements in newspapers, no one had responded by declaring such items. He said, the department would now raid homes and institutions where such items are suspected to be present.

Mr. Das pointed out that the ministry of environment and forests had recently issued an order under a new amended Wild Life Protection Act, directing local committees of individuals possessing any form of animal trophies to submit a declaration in prescribed Performa collected from the office of the chief wildlife warden, West Bengal, or the divisional forest officer of respective areas and apply for a ownership certificate.

Notwithstanding the decision to launch a drive, Mr. Das said that his department would still encourage institutions and individuals in possession of such articles to voluntary declare them.

The declarations can also be sent by registered post, addressed to the chief wildlife warden, West Bengal.
