Jalpaiguri, August, 13 - This is one motley
crew which, armed with self-belief and a mantra from Sir Edmund
Hillary, is ready to scale every mountain.
An eight member team of the Nature and Trekkers`
Club of Jalpaiguri yesterday left for an expedition to Kedardome,
a peak situated at 6830 m in the Garhwal Himalaya. Their motto:
To spread `Clean Himalaya, Save Himalaya` message among mountaineers
and trekkers of the world.
The leader of the team, Mr. Bhaskar Das
said they would collect all the garbage that they may come
across on their way back from the peak. `These garbage are
non-biodegradable and pollutes the mountain`, said Mr. Das.
by ridding the mountain of these, the NTCJ aims to make the
world aware of the need to keep the hills clean since they
are the source of sweet water.
`Recently, during the 50 year celebration
of the Everest conquest, Sir Edmund Hillary, in a message
to all mountaineers and trekkers, urged to keep the mountains
clean. We are just truing to implement his ideas`, Mr. Das
said.
The NTCJ will hire 15 extra porters to carry
the garbage down from the Kedardome peak. The way to the Kedardome
has always been very difficult and precarious. There are several
crevasses and one has to watch the blizzards, Mr. Das said.
The last summit camp if the NTCJ would be
set up at 20000 feet, from where Kedardome is situated at
a distance of 2410 ft. It will take nine hours to reach the
peak from the summit camp. The trekkers will have to recede
down the summit camp that day as there is no shelter in between
the peak and last summit camp. They will have to travel for
15 hours, Mr. Das said
Trekking will start from Gangotri on 17
August. On 4 September, the team will return back from Gangotri
and leave for Delhi via Uttar Kashi on 6 September.
The eight-member team comprises Mr. Badal
Debnath (40), Mr. Pinaki Dasgupta (27), Mr. Dipankar Sen (27),
Ms. Jayita Singha Sarker (25), Mr. Prasenjit Roy (22), Mr.
Dehasish Lala (45), Mr. Pradosh Kusum Das (62), and Bhaskar.
The first five and Bhaskar are the climbers
and the other two are supporting members of the team.
