DARJEELING, Dec. 30. - Flush with the excitement of
the unexpected snowfall, a group of young persons from the town has
decided to hold an exhibition of photographs of the snowfall here
from tomorrow.
The exhibition called Photo Freeze is
open to all, and is incidentally being organised by the same group
responsible for holding the Darjeeling Carnival last month. The
exhibition will be on for a week. One of the organisers, Mr Sashish Prasad, explained that many residents
and visitors had taken a great number of photographs during and
after the snowfall.
`The extraordinary beauty of Darjeeling
during the snowfall has been captured by many people. The exhibition will not only be an opportunity to showcase talents
but will also promote the town,` he said.
Photographs will be put up along the whole stretch of the Nehru
Road, from Keventers to the Oxford Book Store. Entry forms are being
given out from photo labs and other select outlets. Prizes for best
entries shall be given at the end of the show.
Mr DD Pradhan, owner of the popular local photo-lab, the Das Studio,
has been approached by people wanting to develop and print photographs.
`On an average, we are receiving nearly 200 rolls everyday from
customers since the day of the snowfall. We are not used to such
a great workload. It is hard to convince customers, most of whom
are impatient to see their pictures, that we will take longer than
normal to print the photographs,`said Mr Pradhan.
Apart from developing a mountain of pictures, the studio has also
been selling cheap cameras like hot cakes. `Many people who did
not own a camera could not resist the temptation to buy one,`Mr
Pradhan pointed out. Only yesterday, the studio sold eight cameras.
There were some customers who bought as many as 15 film rolls at
a time, he added. The town is also suddenly crowded with tourists.
Hoteliers said that they had not seen so many visitors in the town
during this time of the year for a long time. Apart from developing a mountain of pictures, the studio has also
