MLA calls for revival of Indo - Bangla rail link

Cooch Behar, July 30. - The demand for restoration of the rail link between Gitaldaha in Cooch Behar and Mogulhat in Bangladesh has been renewed.

Alipurduar MLA and convenor of the Dooars Rail Unnayan Sangram Committee Mr. Nirmal Das yesterday made an appeal at the State Assembly to chief minister Mr. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee xand Transport minister Mr. Subhash Chakraborty to restore the rail link.

He said once the rail link is revived, passengers from North Bengal can reach Kolkata within eight and half hours from Alipurduar Jn. Mr. Das said he requested the ministers to take up the matter with the railway minister, Mr. Nitish Kumar.

He even suggested a name for the proposed train as Samhati Express, taking a cue from Samjhouta Express. He also wrote a letter to the railway minister and the chairman of the railway board, requesting them to consider the proposal.

According to Mr. Das, the rail link could act as a catalyst in improving relations between India and Bangladeh. Not only will the people of Coochbehar, Alipurduar and Dooars be benefited, even Bhutan will be benefited from the project.
