Mirik set to be anglers paradise

Siliguri, May 6.- If you are disappointed that you can't get that tackle into play as often as you would like to, Mirik and angling are near at hand. Though a major tourist destination, Mirik has somehow been underrated.

And, the DGHC has made plans to set up an aquarium and introduce angling facilities to do away with the tag. `Once the aquarium comes up, we expect tourism to receive a boost` district fishery officer, DGHC, Mr. Pradip Roy said.

According to Mr. Roy, the aquarium would be set up beside the well known Mirik lake covering more than 7,200 sqft at a cost of Rs. 80 lakh. `The state government has already sanctioned Rs. 60 lakh for the purpose and work is on in full swing. The aquarium is expected to be completed by next year`, Mr. Roy said. The DGHC fisheries department plans to preserve inland fish, sea fish and the local variety in the aquarium. In addition to constructing the aquarium, the DGHC fisheries department also proposes to introduce angling in a major way at the Mirik lake.

`The proposal has been accepted in principle and the state government has sanctioned Rs. 10 lakh for the purpose. We are now planning to erect platforms around the lake for anglers,` Mr. Roy said. To make the Mirik lake look more attractive, the fisheries department, DGHC will release more grass carps. `The grass carp population has gone down significantly over the years,` said the official.
