Gangtok, Nov. 16: The state tourism department is organising
a month-long food and culture festival at Titanic Park in the heart
of Gangtok to bring cheer to tourists during the off-season.
The monthlong festival struck a religious
note today with the celebration of the Buddhist auspicious day of
Lhabab Duechen. A three-day Buddha Mahautsav, jointly organised
by three state departments - eccelestial, tourism and culture -
saw the hill state capital celebrate the day with prayers at Tsuklakhang
(the royal chapel).
A peace procession was also taken out via Nam Nang to M. G. Marg.
A prayer session then followed at the Thakurbari Mandir complex
with chief minister Pawan Chamling participating in the programme
as the chief guest.
The mahautsav has been clubbed with the monthlong food and culture
festival being organised to woo visitors to the state. In a bid to promote Sikkim as a round-the-year destination, the
tourism department flagged off the festival at Titanic Park on Friday.
State tourism minister K. T. Gyaltsen was the chief guest at the
inaugural function. Ethnic Sikkimese dishes are on offer for gourmets.
Cultural programmes and other events are being staged opposite the
tourist information centre.
A jazz band from Mumbai performed at the venue last night, bringing
Gangtok residents and tourists out in large numbers.
