Film boost to hil tourism

Kalimpong, Nov. 18: Tourism in the town and neighbouring areas has received a shot-in-the-arm with Calcutta film-makers lining up to shoot song sequences here.

Earlier, people used to come here often to shoot their films. However, this stopped around three years ago. Now film-makers are coming here for this purpose again,` said Anil Pradhan, member of Hotels and Restaurant Owners' Association of Kalimpong.

The area's natural beauty and reputation as the `town of blossoms` has made it especially attractive for song sequences. `A few months ago, song sequences for two Bengali films were shot here. One of the films, Mayer Achal featured stars like Prasenjit and Rachna,` said Pradhan. Another Bengali film was shot at a location near Deolo. Actors like Jeet and Reshmi were here for the shoot. The film is being produced by Salim Javed,` said Sanjay Das, manager of the DGHC Deolo Tourist Lodge.

Film-makers from the region and outside have made plans to shoot in Kalimpong in the days ahead. `A lot of enquiries are coming in from film-makers. Sometime ago, I also received queries from south Indian film-makers who are planning to shoot here,` said Das.

The arrival of stars, film crews and producers are likely to give tourism-related activities a much-needed fillip in and around the town.

`Right now, they are coming mainly to shoot song sequences. There is a lot of potential for this type of tourism here, because there are loads of places in Kalimpong which are ideal for film-making. It is a cheaper destination and that provides an added incentive for activities like film-making which involves the stay of a large group of people,` said Pradhan.

Many people expect to benefit economically from the arrival of the film units. `When film crews are here, they are bound to buy things from the local market and use local vehicles and facilities,` Pradhan explained.
