Winter fest to woo visitors

Kalimpong, Nov. 20: Darjeeling's hospitality for tourists has rubbed off on Kalimpong. Taking cue from Darjeeling Carnival, Kalimpong has organized a winter fest.

The eighty-day festival - slated between Christmas and New Year - aims to promote culture, heritage and tourism. `The programme will start on the evening of December 24 and continue till December 31. Our aim is to showcase the culture and heritage of this place and promote tourism in the area,` said Sandip Jain, chief coordinator of Kalimpong Winter Fest.

The festival is being organized by a group of youths with the help of Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council. Darjeeling police, Kalimpong Municipality, West Bengal Forests Development Corporation, the army, NGOs, associations, clubs and heads of educational institutions will also chip in for the fest's success.

The highlight of the programme will be cultural shows of different communities to be held on the main road. The fest will also include rock climbing at Pedong, angling and rafting in the Teesta, local food festivals, processions of different communities in their traditional costumes, a picnic, dance competitions, musical programmes, bike rallies and flower shows. Prominent local personalities who have made a mark in literature and art will also be felicitated on the occasion.

Apart from Kalimpong town area, the different venues include Pedong, Rellie, Teesta and Char Khola near Samthar. Corporate houses have agreed to fund the programme. `We will not collect any money from the people here. We have contacted some corporate houses for funds and they have responded positively,` said Jain.
