Kalimpong, Oct. 13: Lava and Loleygaon now have competition.
The DGHC is working hard at projecting the virtues of alternative
destinations like Samthar; Rikkisum and Gorubathan to woo Kalimpong-bound
tourists. New packages have been introduced to
put these places on the tourist map.
DGHC tourism area manager Bimal Gazmer said: `Most tourists
visiting Kalimpong go to Lava and Loleygaon and ignore the other
places. Gorubathan, Rishab, Pedong and many other spots in the area
have great tourism potential but visitors to Kalimpong don't even
know that such places exist.`
The one-week tour package will consist of the day's stay in Kalimpong
where the visitors can go sightseeing to nearby attractions like
Deolo, Durpin, the nurseries and other places in and around Kalimpong
town. Efforts are now on to convince tourists to travel to these places.
`We are trying to promote the other destinations also. We
have contracted our operators from Calcutta and have asked them
to highlight the attractions of these spots. We are also planning
to introduce new packages for the tourists. These will highlight
the new destinations,` said Gazmer.
`We have prepared a new tourism package for seven days which
we will introduce in the next season. The package will include places
like Pedong and Rishab. We will also promote places like Gorubathan
which tourists usually do not visit because they are considerably
far,` he added.
The second day will offer tourists river rafting on the Teesta
at Chitray which is around 14 km downhill from Kalimpong. One-day
halts in places like Rishab, Gorubathan, Lava and Loleygaon are
also included in the tour package.
`We are also keeping an option open for tourists. They can
choose the package they want. When they are going to a certain destination,
they can plan their itinerary to take in the places that lie along
the way. A person going from Kalimpong to Lava can also visit Pedong
on the way and visit the tourist attractions like the old Damsong
fort. Similarly, when visiting Rishab, the tourist can trek down
to Rishi khola,` said Gazmer.
