KALIMPONG,
April 20. - The DGHC's tourism department has launched new trekking itineraries for tourists who would be be visiting Kalimpong.
The department and natives have come up with four new trekking routes.
With this, the tourists could trek across
various exciting places like Lava (35 km from Kalimpong), Damsang
Fort (built in 1690 to stem aggression of the East India Company's
troops), Neora Valley (second
National park in the district known among bird-watchers and flora
and fauna enthusiasts), Kaffer (offers a glorious view of the Kanchanjunga
range and a breathaking sunrise). Other interesting spots covered
by the routes include Samthar, Rochelle, Todey-Tangta, Samco Ropeway
and Relli.
The trek from Kalimpong to Samsing - via Lava,
Pankhasari, Neora valley, Rochella, Tangta, Todey, Panitar, Jholung,
Rongo, Kumai - is the lengthiest one, requiring even days to complete.
"Kalimpong could be one of the most pleasant and unforgettable
experiences in one's life. The hill's charm, beauty, mystery and
adventure could be experienced if one treks through the sleepy hamlets,
dense forest and lush green fields", said Mr Bimal Gajmer,
area manager, DGHC tourism department.
The new routes cover mountains between 3,000 to 7,000 feet above
sea-level and could be called low-altitude treks. "This would
be more health friendly as low-altitude trekking is not as injurious
and risky as high altitude trekking", he said.
