Hamlets live in flood fear Bhutan embankment sweptaway : July 7, 2004

Ten thousand people of Jaigaon-1 Gram of Kalchini Panchayet Block in Alipurduar are under the constant threat of the rushing rivers. Rivers like Jogikhola, Goborjiti and Khola have destroyed much of the agriculture land of the villages. Resulting from the heavy showers of last night, the villages like Mangalbari, Turibari and Raigaon have gone under 3 to 4 feet water. The Jogikhola has already washed away more than 100 meters of Boundary wall on the Bhutan border.

Residents of Mangalbari village who are spending sleepless nights said that they have lost their only source of income i.e. the farming land. They also fear that the river spars, which have already been washed away, may cause a great danger for their villages if not repaired immediately.

The condition of the Turibari village is worse. People have shifted to two storied buildings. Villagers are trying to save their houses by placing sand bags. The Goborjiti khola has wiped out the main connecting road of the village.

The Upapradhaan of the Jaigaon-1 Gram Panchayet said that they are trying to improve the condition but only some positive activity of the Bhutan Government can save the villages from the coming problems. The Officials of Bhutan Government are blaming funds crunch have declared that at the moment there is not much that they can do to improve the situation.
