For the forest officers of Buxa
Tiger Reserve (west) Lunch is more important that life of the
wildlife it is supposed to protect. The authorities were found having
launch in a roadside 'Dhaba' while an injured leopard waited for medical
attention. The leopard was wounded by the laborers of the Satali Tea
Estate.
According to information, the garden
management informed the forest officials at around 11 am about the
capture of the leopard. But the officers and workers of the forest
department came to the rescue only late in the afternoon whilst
it takes only half-an-hour to reach the garden from the tiger reserve.
When they come to the tea garden they found the leopard was breathing
badly as the laborers wounded it and chopped off its tail.One of
the forest stuff complained that despite his repeated plea to speed
up the rescue operation, the senior officials did not heed. Even
when the leopard was rescued ultimately, no veterinary surgeon was
informed and the leopard was dumped in the Tiger Reserve.
Ravi Kant Sinha, the Conservator of forests and the Director of
the Tiger Reserve came to know about the incidence at around 10
in the night. He informed the matter to the Deputy Field Director
of the Tiger Reserve Mr. Y.T.Aden. Only after this serious efforts
were made to save the leopard. It was around midnight that the animal
received some treatment. But it was already too late and the tiger
expired later.
