Team of Eight on mountain mission : july 19, 2004

Eight members of the Himalayan Nature and Adventure Foundation (HNAF), a Siliguri-based NGO, have started their expedition for Mt. Shinkhun West (6127 meters), Mt. Shinkhun East (6081 meters) in the Zanskar valley of Himachal Pradesh and also an unnamed peak at 6030 meters.

The Urban Development and Municipal Affair MinisteMr.Ashok Bhattacharya flagged off the mission and handed over the Tricolor flags to Debabrata Ghosh, the team leader, which will be unfolded atop the two virgin and one unnamed peaks. On this occasion Kushang Sherpa, the person who climbed the Everest five times, presented the flag of the HNAF to Debabrata Ghosh.

In his speech Mr. Sherpa emphasized the importance of the Sherpas in mountaineering expeditions. He explained that the natural knowledge of the Sherpas about the P's and the Q's of the mountains will be very useful for the mountaineers. Two young and experienced Sherpas, Pemba and Pasang are included in the mission.

Team leader Mr. Debabrata said that they have organised the expedition with an intention to know the unknown. They received help from Indian Mountaineering Foundation to design the map and they are now trying to find out the route to the peaks. Mr. Debabrata agreed that the prospect of being the first climber to a mountain has its own excitement.

The only woman climber of the team, Upasana Dewan said that this is her first expedition and she is ready for this. Her dream will come true if she completes the task of scaling the two unclimbed peaks. Mr. Bhattacharya added that the expedition would help increasing interest in adventure sports. He also assured that Government would also help encourage this type of initiatives.
