Travel news of North East India

Expert impasse continues: July 19, 2004

The export standoff entered its fourth day today. The dispute started when the Border Security Force in Hili international border challenged exporters to show their authentic papers of export.

The Secretary of the Exporters' Custom Clearing Agent Association, Mr. Ashok Mondal said that they are not bound to show the papers to anybody but the Custom Officers. But BSF is harassing them by searching the trucks and verifying the papers although they were not supposed to do that. The Superintendent of Customs Mr. A. Kujur also confirmed what Mr. Mondal said.

But Mr. Ram Narayan Ram, the Commanding Officer of the BSF declared that they are given the orders not to release any truck without proper checking of the papers. Realizing the importance of the issue, the District Magistrate called upon a meeting of the exporters and the BSF officials. The exporters association is now hoping that a settlement will take place in the meeting.
