Under the direction of Kiran Thakuri, the Gorkha Dukhya
Niwarak Samity has organized a play named 'Amar Athma'. As the spectators
were concentrated in the play and keenly waited for curtains to roll up, a few
policemen entered the hall and arrested members of the audience.
As the panic stricken audience was about to leave the hall. An announcement
was made from the stage declaring that this is part of the play.
The arrested audiences were taken to the stage and the play continued.
In the late eighties, as the Gorkhaland agitation began to calm
down, it was the first time that 'Amar Athma' was staged. Later
as theater audience in the hills started to dwindle the drama scene
went through a lull. The Himalayan Theatre Workshop (HTW) established
in '94 has now come back to revive drama in the hills by giving
a chance to local actors and playwrights to stage drama again.
The president of HTW Mr. Jiwan Gurung, said that though there were
lack of quality scriptwriters, they were determined to do something
in this regard. Thus they decided to start a drama competition in
the area in order to find out the talents of the hill.
The next step going to be organisation of plays between Dushera
and Diwali where the best performer will be given cash award. The
entries will be accepted till 15th September and the venue will
be selected soon.
