Landslide Woes : June 30, 2004

A high level Expert Committee on landslide set up in 2000 by the government has come up with some recommendations for taking preventive measures against landslide. But the continuing landslide in the hills show continued Government apathy in this respect.

It was earlier decided that the use of plastic carry bags will be banned in the hills. But till now there is no sign of success in this respect. The same is true with the controlling of traffic flow and loading restriction for trucks in the hills. The Officer-in-charge of the expert committee, Sonam Bhutia said that although the traffic officials came to Darjeeling once to look after the matter, no follow up have taken place till now

Factors like increasing population, inadequate infrastructure, inappropriate building rules and the uncontrolled growth of vehicular traffic are the reasons for which a transport survey is required. Experts point their finger to increasing heavy vehicular traffic on the highways as a reason for increasing landslide.
