China 's dispute with Indian on Sikkim persists

BEIJING: A spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Liu Jianchao said that territorial right on sikkim has yet to be decided.
Sikkim is still a controversial issue, he said dispelling the impression that China has accepted Sikkim as part of Indian territory.

Asked whether China and India have settled the Sikkim issue, the spokesman said at a weekly news briefing that this question is an `issue` left over from history and that it would be resolved gradually with the improvement of their bilateral ties.Meanwhile, ahead of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama's visit to Taiwan, China asked him to acknowledge its sovereignty over Tibet as well as Taiwan to start dialogue on the vexed Tibet issue. `We have repeatedly urged the Dalai Lama to recognise Taiwan as part of Chinese territory and give up his position of seeking independence of Tibet. Only by doing so, the central government of China can have dialogue with the Dalai Lama,` Liu Jianchao told reporters.Asked to comment on the Dalai's upcoming trip to Taiwan to participate in the inauguration of the second term of office of President Chen Shui-bian on Thursday, Liu claimed that Tibet and Taiwan were part of Chinese territory.

`Tibet has been Chinese territory since ancient times. It is the same with Taiwan. If the Dalai Lama has the sincerity to solve the (Tibet) question, he should admit and make a public statement, admitting that Taiwan and Tibet are part of Chinese territories,` the spokesman added.
