Darjeeling, May 23 The week-long celebrations
of the 50th anniversary of first ascent of Mt Everest six
Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay were today inaugurated
by West Bengal Governor Viren J Shah at Brabourne Park, commonly
known as the Mall.
The year-long celebration to mark first
climb of the world's highest peak by six Edmumd and late Tenzing
Norgay on May 19, 1953 will conclude here with this programme,
organised by the citizens of Darjeeling to create awareness
on adventure sports and promote tourism.
The celebration includes exhibition showcasing
equipment and gear used by Tenzing Norgay, felicitation of
some local Everesters, including Tenzing's son Jamling Norgay,
Torjee Latoo, Newang Gomboo, painting competitions for children,
exhibition of rare stamps on mountaineering, film shows and
sport climbing in the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI)
and seminar on climbing.
The Governor lauded the organiser for taking
up the cause for promotion of adventure sports and tourism
without any help from the government This would not only create
awareness among the people but also help in building the character
of the young generation, he said.
About 20 NGOs participated in the celebration. |
