Kurseong Nov. 8: The Kurseong Carnival
kicked off at Eagles Craig here today.
Inaugurated by Reverend Father J.M. Abraham,
the ceremony was attended by the Kurseong subdivisional officer
B. Dasgupta, chairman of Kurseong Municipality P. C. Agarwal
and executive councillors of DGHC N.B. Khawas and Nimcheki
Pradhan, among others.
`I have always considered Kurseong my hometown
though I was born in Canada. This place has all the potential
of becoming a tourist-friendly destination,` said Father Abraham.
`The aim and purpose of Darjeeling Carnival
is different from the one being held here despite the fact
that it is being organised by the same group. Their (Darjeeling)
aim is to bring back the past glory of the place. But our
purpose is to portray the town as a prospective tourist destination
and revive the socio-economic condition that has deteriorated
over the past few years,` said N.B. Khawas, the executive
councillor.
According to Khawas, though the fest has
been organised at short notice, the efforts of the civic body
and the organisers were noteworthy. He, however, stressed
the need for public participation. `Unlike Darjeeling, where
youths have take the initiative to restore the past glory
of the town, more public participation is needed in this part
of the hills,` Khawas said.
Inter-school art competition, cultural events,
baby show, longest hair competition and musical extravaganzas
were held on the first day. A seminar, on `How to uplift the
socio economic condition of Kurseong`, has been lined up for
the carnival. |
