The district authority in Jalpaiguri has
undertaken several major plans to boost the potential of the
area as a tourism destination. The Tourism Development and
Investment Plan has projected an investment of Rs. 600 crore
in the tourism sector and they are looking to generate nearly
2 lakhs employment opportunities.
Webcon, a consultancy enterprise of the
government, has been given the charge to draft a plan. After
several rounds of visits to the region and meetings with concerned
people, webcon has come out with its draft plan. A survey
of the project area was also undertaken by the Webcon authorities.
A. Subbiah, Jalpaiguri district magistrate,
said, “It is expected that we will formally inaugurate
it very soon.” The projects will be completed in three
phases. At first they will launch an environmental building
programme and some posters and short films have been already
printed and these will help the tourists to get information
about the beauty of the district. According to a source the
administration has chosen 50 spots to promote tourism and
among these 37 are in rural are. These will be inaugurated
within next month by the administration with private participation.
The administration will use 590 crore for the third phase
of the projects. The district magistrate said that they are
looking for 21 mega projects and to generate employment for
around 1.79 lakh people.
