Platform for tourism plunge

The district authority in Jalpaiguri has undertaken several major plans to boost the potential of the area as a tourism destination. The Tourism Development and Investment Plan has projected an investment of Rs. 600 crore in the tourism sector and they are looking to generate nearly 2 lakhs employment opportunities.

Webcon, a consultancy enterprise of the government, has been given the charge to draft a plan. After several rounds of visits to the region and meetings with concerned people, webcon has come out with its draft plan. A survey of the project area was also undertaken by the Webcon authorities.

A. Subbiah, Jalpaiguri district magistrate, said, “It is expected that we will formally inaugurate it very soon.” The projects will be completed in three phases. At first they will launch an environmental building programme and some posters and short films have been already printed and these will help the tourists to get information about the beauty of the district. According to a source the administration has chosen 50 spots to promote tourism and among these 37 are in rural are. These will be inaugurated within next month by the administration with private participation. The administration will use 590 crore for the third phase of the projects. The district magistrate said that they are looking for 21 mega projects and to generate employment for around 1.79 lakh people.
