Folk fest to boost Dooars economy - 15/04/05

The local residents of Dooars and the tourists will soon get the opportunity to enjoy heritage and ethnic culture and tradition of the dooars. Two festivals are soon going to start at Jalpaiguri and Lataguri to celebrate the richness of local cultural heritage. The festival at Jalpaiguri has been named as Jalpaiguri Zilla Sanghati Utsav - 2005 and The Jalpaiguri Folk Cultural Festival and the Lataguri festival has been named as Dooars Eco-Tourism Mela. The festival will start from next Sunday.Folk fest to boost Dooars economy

According to the organisers the festival will give the information about the folk people of the dooars to the visitors. Golabari Pragati Sangha and Pathagar of Lataguri, the organizers of the festival are now busy to set the stage at Rabindra Bhawan. The festival in Jalpaiguri will be inaugurated by the state finance minister Mr. Asim Dasgupta. Snow lion dance, baul, chhou, bihu, tusu and bhatiali are some of the programs which would be performed by the local people.

Basudeb Ghosh, the district tourism nodal officer said that the organization of this type of festival would help promote eco-tourism of the region. The festival is also important for the folk group who will get a chance to perform their art. The folk groups are already invited for both of the festival. Proloy Bhattacharya, the joint secretary of the organising committee of the Sanghati Utsav said, `The local folk groups will perform everyday at the festival.` According to the organizer the festival will be able to attract a large number of visitors. The tour operator and hoteliers expect a good number of tourists at Lataguri during the festivals. The forest will remain closed from 16th April to 29th April due to the elephant census.
