Ravangla set for fest frolic - 19/04/05

Tourists coming to Ravangla to enjoy the natural beauty will be able to attend a five day long festival at Ravangla. The festive spirit which has already set in, helped by streams of colorful flags and residents bedecked with impressive illuminations.

The locals expect that the festival will be able to improve the popularity of this subdivisional town as a popular tourist spot in south Sikkim like Gangtok. The festival is organized by Ravangla Tourism Development and assisted by Sikkim Tourism and there theme is handicrafts. A large number of states in the north east including Sikkim and kingdom of Bhutan will take part in the festival.

The festival will be inaugurated tomorrow and the chief minister Mr. Pawan Chamling has been invited as the chief guest for the inauguration ceremony. Another food festival will be organized at Cho-Zo Lake, below Ralong Lake and 1 km from the town bazaar which is the venue for this festival. Some other programmes like cultural programme, music concerts and fashion shows have also been lined up. A short trek in the little known areas including Ravangla`s very own Maenam hill is expected to be organized. The adventure lovers can enjoy mountain biking, boating and para gliding in the festival. The work at the venue has been supervised by the local MLA and urban development minister Mr. D. D. Bhutia.
The tourists can get the traditional crafts from the stall which has been kept at the one side of the venue. Ravangla which has already been popular as a famous tourist spot in Sikkim and this type of festival will increase its potentials. The tour operators are anxious about the festival and according to them it will help them to provide visitors at Ravangla in large number. After getting a huge reaction from the local people and the tourists the organizers are thinking to make the festival an annual affair.
