Tissue culture lab in Kalimpong – cheers for flower lovers.

Kalimpong, July 31: Flower lovers in Kalimpong have something to cheer about. The West Bengal Comprehensive Area Development Corporation is setting up a tissue culture lab for mass production of cut flowers in the scenic hill station. They have already sent a proposal to the state panchayat and rural development department for the purpose.

The agricultural technical officer of Project Comprehensive Area Development Corporation (CADC), Ashok Pradhan, said, that to start large scale production to meet the demands of bulk orders it was a dire necessity to set up a lab in Kalimpong. He also said that at present the seedlings were brought from far-off places like Pune, which increased the cost of production hugely. According to him, with the new arrangement, they will be able to get more than a lakh of seedlings at reduced prices.

The proposal of the lab, which is worth Rs. 3 crore, was sent to the government last month.
Under the Swarna Jyoti Gram Swarojgar Yojna, in 2003, training programs was held in floriculture and horticulture for self-help groups. This brought a significant increase in the number of growers of cut flowers. Three officials of the CADC also underwent training on tissue culture last year.

`Under the program funded by the District Rural Development Cell, we have trained 900 growers, who have started growing cut flowers and reported a significant increase in the demand for flowers`, said Ashok Pradhan.
