Nathu-la`s date with history

Gangtok, Aug 1: Will history be rewritten at last? It is believed that the formal re-opening of the Nathu-la trade route will take place on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti. However, the traders around Sikkim were worried if the method of trade will include `barter` – an ancient trade practice. But there has been no official document or declaration mentioning `barter` till date.

Senior officials of the Sikkim Commerce and Industries Department said that barter system cannot be ruled out in the initial phases, but trade will depend largely on exchange of currency, as banks, immigration and custom services were already in place.

The official announcement today said that the Centre has fixed October 2 as the tentative date for the formal re-opening of the trade route.

In today’s meet the traders suggested the inclusion of various commodities that would be traded across the border. However, they could hardly add any more to the exhaustive list already prepared by the Nathu-la trade group constituted by the government.

The government had demanded Rs 2,122 Crore for the development of the project, and the central commerce and industry ministry has appointed RITES for ascertaining the validity of the state’s demands.
