Raiganj,
Aug 2: Bird`s nesting inside the town in Raiganj
has been creating a mess with their droppings. To tackle this
problem the forest department has decided to increase the
area of the Kulik bird sanctuary to confine them inside the
area.
The situation seems to have taken dire proportions,
because the residents had started to fell down trees to avoid
the avian mess. But the forest department was enraged with
the actions because a few birds had died after the trees were
cut down, and they lodged a complaint with the police. The
police arrested three people on Friday on the basis of the
complaint.
According to the Divisional Forest Officer
(DFO), Ajay Kumar Das, storms and floods had damaged many
trees in the past and many birds were killed. This has forced
the birds to take shelter in trees inside the town.
The Kulik Bird Sanctuary is inhabited by
the night heron, open-bill storks, egrets, cormorants and
lesser adjutant storks.
The forest department has decided to acquire
29 acres of land for the sanctuary and plant around 20,000
saplings in the newly acquired area. At present, the sanctuary
is spread in an area of 130 hectares. |
