Silchar, Aug 5: The endangered
Goral – a rare and beautiful goat-antelope species found
only in the Cachar area - is expecting some survival support
from the Barak Forest Reserve.
The Barak Forest Reserve is a treasure house
of precious plants with great medicinal properties, orchids,
and rare flora and fauna. It spans an area of 20,527 hectares
and is being upgraded to a biosphere reserve. This will ensure
protection of the remaining eight Gorals in the country.
The Goral is a magnificent creature –
long haired goat-antelope with horns that curves backwards.
They are extremely nimble and can move at high speed among
rough terrains. It is found in the Himalayan lower reaches
of Cachar and Nepal, and also in some parts of China and Korea.
