Continuous landslide in the Hills

Darjeeling, Aug 7: Continuous rainfall for the last several days has severely affected normal life in Darjeeling and has already caused six landslides in the last 24 hours.

Two houses near Victoria Falls and Sister Nivedita were completely destroyed and dozens were precariously perched waiting for the inevitable to happen.

Three members of a family at Sister Nivedita had a miraculous escape when their house was washed down by the rain minutes after they had moved to a neighboring house.

Two people were injured when rain-water washed them down to a slope. They were admitted to the Eden hospital and their condition was declared as stable.

The landslide disrupted road and traffic at various places like Gandhi Road, D.B. Giri Road and 18, Lebong Cart Road, while uprooted trees and boulders blocked the road at Tenzing Rock.

However, the power supply remained unaffected throughout the day, and the National Highway 55 was open till evening and no further disasters were reported.
