Darjeeling, Aug 8: Jamling
Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, son of legendary mountaineer, Tenzing
Sherpa, today protested against the Himalayan Mountaineering
Institute (HMI) for discriminating attitude towards the Sherpas
and the local people.
He was disappointed that the Sherpas were
not given due priority, and said that his father was the man
behind the formation and prestige of the HMI. Jamling was
also dismayed that the vital post of Field Training Director
has been abolished. After Tenzing Norgay the vital post was
under the esteemed guidance of Nawang Gombu – the first
man to climb the Everest twice. However, now, the vice-principal
was in charge of the entire training session.
Jamling, who had climbed the Everest himself
as well, was critical of the fact that there were an increased
number of Army personnel in the HMI. Presently, there are
15 army men in the institute against two in 1986.
There are also questions being raised about
the HMI losing its importance gradually. In the past, the
president of the institute was the Prime Minister himself,
but now it has been replaced by the Defence Minister. |
