Malda,
Aug 16: The Divisional Forest Officer of Malda has
requested the Conservator of Forests to shift 50 spotted-deers
from the Adina Deer Park due to lack of space.
A recent count showed that more than 100
deers were living in the park while the permitted number is
only 40. It is feared by the forest officials that the animals
might die of starvation. Their fear not seems to be unfounded
because six spotted-deers have already perished in March,
2005.
According to the DFO, the cost of feeding
the animals is among one of the crucial problems, also, the
road to the park was in a bad state. She said that Rs 6 lakhs
is spent every year on food for the animals.
She plans to expand the area of the park
to accommodate more of the spotted species and divide the
park into four compartments for better management. A plan
to build a bungalow in the park to attract more tourists is
also under way
