Siliguri deserves more

Siliguri, Nov 31: After witnessing the enthusiasm of the local people in tennis, citizens of Siliguri might be seeing another international tennis match in the city. This was told today by ace tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi’s father, G. V. K. Bhupathi.

Talking to the newspapers in the Indoor Stadium here, G.V. K. Bhupathi said that the people of Siliguri deserve to witness an international tennis match. The senior Bhupathi said that he had never expected such a large turnout in a tennis match, and walking to the stadium seemed like a motorcade.

Also the 17 local boys and girls that participated in the tennis match did a commendable job. They were trained in Himalayan Tennis Academy, located at the outskirts of Siliguri. Tennis players in the area do not get adequate exposure and training from national or international experts but they learn mostly by watching them play on TV.
To mark out the first big tennis event in Siliguri a souvenir was brought out, compiled by Milan Sarkar, containing several interesting facts about tennis including records made by Indian Tennis players and international Grand Slam winners since 1877. The book is a collector item for tennis enthusiasts.
Viewers from many parts of the world could watch the tournament live thanks to DD Sports. For the purpose the sponsor had paid Rs 50,000 to Doordarshan.
