Gangtok, Dec. 11: The chief minister of
Sikkim, Pawan Chamling met Union Railway minister Lalu Prasad
to discuss the plans of setting up of a rail link to Sikkim.
In the meeting, Chamling reminded Lalu about the promise made
by the Railway Convention Parliamentary Committee regarding
the participation of the railways in the state’s development.
Since the state is connected to the country
only through National Highway 31A, the rail link was needed,
especially, during the monsoon when landslides were frequent.
The feasibility survey reports and reports of the studies
made by the geological survey have been already submitted
to the railways.
The chief minister also requested the setting
up of a railways reservation centre at Singtam, East Sikkim,
which is an important trade centre of the state. He also asked
the Railways Minister to increase the quota of emergency berths
available for the state and to strengthen the online communication
infrastructure so that reservations can be conducted smoothly.
