Tribal talents in North Bengal

Siliguri, Dec. 16: Artisans are here from Midnapore to participate in the fifth state-level handicrafts fair organised by the village and small scale industries department on the Kanchenjunga Stadium Complex.

Gopal Nandi, a national award winner from Bankura is selling conches made of coconut shells and wood apple at Rs 2,000 each - and he is in a hurry craving as many conches as possible before the fair ends on Monday. He said that for eight generations his family has been carving on shells but due to the shortage he began craving on coconuts. His innovation seems to have paid off.

The handicraft fair has become a success because everyday about 3000-4000 people visit the fair and the numbers double on weekends. Last year the fair had a turnover of Rs 1.2 crore and this year they are hoping to do better. The fair will end on December 18.
