Lepchas Celebrate

Kalimpong, Dec 20: The 274th birth anniversary of Pano Gaeboo Achyok – the last king of the Lepchas – was celebrated on a grand scale in Kalimpong. Members of the Lepcha community across Bhutan, Sikkim and other parts of India came here to pay their homage.

It was organised by the Indigenous Lepcha Tribal Association in partnership with the Indira Gandhi National Museum of Mankind. It included a variety of cultural programmes, an award ceremony and an archery competition. Three books in the Lepcha language were also released.

Early in the morning, the Lepchas offered prayers to their former king at Damsang Fort, which is 20 km from Kalimpong – he is believed to have built the fort. The programme which is held since 1982 is carried out entirely in the Lepcha language.
