Travel news of North East India

A different winter in the Hills

Darjeeling, Dec 21: The cold in November drove most of the residents to the plains, but the ones who braved them were in for a treat in the hills. The cold is biting and the mercury drops everyday but the sky is clear and deep blue. This is unusual because the winters are always marred by thick clouds and fogs in the hills.

The magnificent Kanchenjunga can be seen clearly from the town bathed in iridescent sunlight. The few tourists who dared to venture in the hills this time has been offered an unexpected show of warmth by nature, not mentioning the pleasure of watching breathtaking views of the mountains and landscapes.

A smiling local woman, Jamuna, said, `Im happy with the clear weather and the sun simply because I can dry my clothes and prepare the pickles.` Usually, Darjeeling does not witness clear skies even in the months of April-May and October to December, when the weather is supposed to be good.

Even though the days are clear there is no respite from the bone chilling cold, especially in the morning and the evenings. Last year in January, the town had witnessed one of the heaviest snowfalls in its history, and this time the residents are eagerly expecting the same so that tourists arrive in large numbers
