Sister Nirmala, the superior general
of the Missionaries of Charity, and the predecessor
of Mother Teresa, is honoring Darjeeling with her presence in New
Year’s Eve. The people of the Hill are hoping to have a prosperous
New Year after receiving her blessings.
Her presence might considerably lift the spirit
of the hill people who have been constantly struggling to find an
identity for themselves in India.
She will be felicitated at the Nishkalanka Parish
Hall tomorrow. She is also considered as one among them because
she is a Nepali born in Ranchi. Sister Nirmala had played a vital
role in bringing the Missionaries of Charity to Darjeeling way back
in 1964, which has been working silently behind the scenes for the
welfare of the poor and the downtrodden. Today, the Missionaries
of Charity is a network of hope across 131 countries with 735 centers
around the world - and another 11 more centers will be added
shortly.
According to the superior general the missionaries
never leave the people in their misery even as the world abandons
them. She recalled that three of her sisters were shot dead at Yemen
and Sierra Leone, and six of them were kidnapped and four of them
were shot, but they never left the people they cared for.
Sister Nirmala in her New Year message said: `May
the new year be filled with God`s blessing. May we remain
open to his ways and be aware of God`s tender design to love
everyone` |
