Promotion of tourism in kalimpong Dt-02.02.05

KALIMPONG: Feb. 2nd:- In order to promote tourism potential of the sub-division with the helping hand of West Bengal Forest Development Corporation Kalimpong residents has made several plans.

They want to promote tourism from the hilly terrain of Algarah to the distant plains of Noan, Gorubathan and Jaldakha. Kobra Brothers a club of Algarah, 20 km from

Kalimpong town, already inaugurated a new trekking route from Algarah (5,800 ft) to Jhandhidara (6,800 ft) in September. Tourists can enjoy the view of Kanchenjungha and the Himalayan range in this rout. WBFDC is thinking to set a mini Rest House in Algarah because Algarah has become a popular tourist spot in Kalimpong like Lava and Loleygaon but it can not receive tourists because there is no lodge and rest house. Mr. N. T. Bhutia said, `We should soon initiate some project to promote tourism in Ryshop, near Lava. The whole Himalayan Range including the Kanchenjungha, the Jelep La and the Nathu La passes can be seen from Rishap.`

Tourists will be able to visit some memorable places in the region like Sample Dara (a park made during the colonial rule, possessing rare species of plants and trees), the Damsang Fort (fortress of the last Lepcha king - Gyaboo Achuk). Noam range, 90 km off Kalimpong town, possesses a magnificent trekking trail, like Lethi and Fagu. Noam is also known for Ramthi, a rock-climbing spot and sunrise-viewing point between, Suntale and Fagu. Mr. Gopal Lama, the range manager of Noam, said, `I have got various proposals from different people and the clubs to promote Noam as a tourist spot and we must do something provided it clicks.` `Paren (in block III), Jaldakha, 125 km off the town, will also grow as popular tourist sites, owing to their scenic beauty,` he said. Gorubathan is also full with scenic beauty and it will very soon become a popular tourist spot. Other places of interest, such as the Paanch Pokhari (of mythological importance) and the historic fort, Dalim Gari, as well as various trekking routes and viewpoints are all ready to greet tourists. Kalimpong attracts tourists and now tourists will spend more days in Kalimpong if they can visit these all places and it is obvious that it will increase the economic condition of the region.
